The Focus Gallery of Gallery Underground will present Claim to Fame, a National juried show. Juried by Felecia B McFail, an Arts Commissioner for Arlington County, Virginia and founder of From One Hand To Another — a calligraphy business that turns the spoken word into visual art. This exhibit asked artists to submit the work they are most proud of, their personal Claim to Fame. With 50 pieces from artists across the United States, Claim to Fame showcases a variety of mediums and styles.

Gallery Underground, the juried gallery of the Arlington Artists Alliance, has been named our region’s “Best Art Gallery” in Northern Virginia Magazine’s 2021 reader survey and has received a 2021 “Arlie” as one of Arlington’s “Best Shops” from the readers of ARLNow. Located in the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia, this visual arts venue showcases the work of established and emerging regional artists.

Each month the gallery changes its entire exhibit and presents a special solo, group or juried show in the Focus gallery and a new show from its talented members in the Main gallery, in many forms: mixed media, paintings, sculpture, glass, and ceramic art. Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground and on First Fridays (first Friday of every month) it hosts an opening reception free and open to all.

The Focus Gallery presents Offbeat: Mixed Media Art from artists Steena Fullmer and Anna Nazaretz Radjou during the month of November. The works from Ms Fullmer and Ms Radjou deploy glass, found objects, stenciling, fabric, embroidery, acrylic, and printmaking in creating patterns, symbols, and unleashed statements.

From fantastical and fun to weird and wild, the unexpected is showcased in every moment. Ms Fullmer and Ms Radjou came together to share the show after discovering their mutual passion for mixing mediums in unconventional ways. Their synergy extends to style, backgrounds, color, and even their taste for the alternative in music.

Additionally, our Main Gallery features new works by our gallery members, in media including oil, acrylic, pastel, watermedia, sculpture, glass, and ceramics.

Arlington, Virginia – Gallery Underground’s Focus Gallery in September presents Enjoy the View, a solo show of oil paintings by local artist Jessica Mickey. Sunsets, clouds, water, and traveling are at the top of Jessica’s list of favorite things. And over the past dozen plus years, she has skillfully combined those loves with photorealistic oil painting. Jessica has a knack for capturing moments in time and amazing scenes, sometimes even beyond what a camera could do. In fact, most of her paintings start out as photographs that she then transforms into moody artworks that make you feel as if you could step right into them. While the pandemic halted her travels, it did not stop her from painting and this first ever solo show of hers invites us all on a visual journey of places she’s been, wishes to go, or merely finds beautiful. Jessica Mickey’s solo show encompasses 40 of her landscape paintings and offers us all a brief moment in time to stop and ‘enjoy the view.’

Additionally, our Main Gallery features new works by our gallery members, in media including oil, acrylic, pastel, watermedia, sculpture, glass, and ceramics.

Many of the most influential modern art movements relied on the daring, innovative, and often shocking use of color. Whether it was the bold and non-naturalist colors of Fauvism to the unmixed primary colors of the Impressionists to depict reflected light, these movements used color in new and courageous ways defying the accepted concepts of what constituted art. Gallery Underground asked artists to submit work which depict their individual courageous use of color.

LandJewelry is a project thattook place on the island of Öland, Sweden, in the last days ofAugust 2021. Eight jewelry artists from four different countries ofthe Baltic region met on the island to create art or, as theorganizers call it, land jewelry. The artists worked with materialsat hand in the surrounding landscape to create temporary works ofart, reflecting on the challenges facing ecosystem that is of theBaltic Sea.

These include for exampleeutrophication, marine litter and declining biodiversity. Ninecountries surround the Baltic Sea, with around 15 million peopleliving on its shores. It is an intensively used ecosystem and one ofthe aims of this project is to communicate its ecological situationthrough the language of land art and through the lens of modernjewelry.

During the five days working onthe coast of Segerstad in southeast Öland, the team created almost30 “Land Jewels”, most of which were sculptural installations.The exhibition at the Klaipėda Gallery presents photographs of theseworks and a video of the pieces on site. In addition, in theexhibition you can also get acquainted with the previous jewelry workof each artist.

All the works in the symposiumwere left where they were created, with the exception of somenon-biodegradable materials that the artists removed. Sooner orlater, this land jewelry will decay and the materials from which itwas created will once again become part of the surrounding nature.Traces of artist’s intervention will disappear. Last but not leastthese pieces are also simply an homage to this – our beautifulBaltic Sea.

The project was initiated andorganized by Maja Breife (Sweden) and Wiebke Pandikow (Finland).Further participants: Aino-Astrid Gaedtke (Germany), Elli Hukka(Finland), Ingrid Berg (Sweden), Kajsa Wikström (Sweden) andLithuanian artists Karina Kazlauskaitė and Lauryna Kiškytė.

Artists MajaBreife and Wiebke Pandikow will inviteKlaipeda residents to take part in a landjewelry workshopat TheDutchman’s Cap on Saturday, May 14, at 12 noon– the body itself and the objects aroundus will become tools and materials in thecreation of small pieces of artin the environment.Pre-registration by email is required: klaipeda.lds@gmail.com.

Arlington, Virginia – Gallery Underground’s Focus Gallery in May presents Dancing Diamonds, a solo show by Jean Offutt Lewis. Jean Offutt Lewis’ exploration of light on water was inspired after her move to the Northern Neck of Virginia. There, at a certain time of year, dependent on the Earth’s relationship to the Sun, “Dancing Diamonds” appear; single points of light, each a tiny reflection of the sun or the full moon, create kinetic light shows atop windswept water. Using acrylics, a water-based medium, Offutt Lewis reduces this natural phenomenon into an interplay of color, line, and circles in a series of abstracted waterscape paintings.
