Edge on the Square presents Under the Same Sun: Reimagining the Edges of Chinatown, its second annual contemporary art festival, to celebrate the enduring radiance of San Francisco Chinatown. As constant as the sun, are the residents, community members, organizations who continue to rise, persist and shine in the face of adversity. The past year has yielded moments of darkness; extending from the war in Ukraine to polarized rulings by the US Supreme Court impacting Americans’ freedoms, civil rights and liberties. The overturning of Roe vs Wade, affirmative action, and support of discriminatory policies are poignant reminders that the critical work for social justice and equity are continuous and ongoing. 

Further within these tempos, the festival meditates on the voices, histories, and footnotes that contribute to the resilient luminosity of Chinatown, both sunlit and shaded: in the silhouetted crevices of multigenerational households, the afterglow of revolutions, and in the life and labor of all who identify with Chinatown as a landing spot of diverse togetherness. At Edge on the Square, we ask how we can crystallize illumination into revelation, potent regeneration into progress, and healing transformation of harms and burns into collective power?

The one-day festival brings together over 20 Asian American and BIPOC artists and their multimedia artworks, installations, activations and performances to reflect on contemporary issues, questions and concerns relating to individual and collective freedoms, identities, and civil liberties. Along with cultural partners, arts organizations, and community residents – the coalition of voices amplify unity and solidarity within multi and cross-cultural experiences and histories. Under the same sun, from the center to the ‘edges’ of Chinatown and beyond, we glisten with the resilience of the past, tenacity of now, and earned optimism for a future powered by collective action, persistent courage, and wise hope.

This group show features charcoal drawings, cold and hot wax treatments, embroidery, encaustic, fused glass, mixed media, acrylic and oil paintings. The Focus Gallery of Gallery Underground will present Waters Of Life a solo show by Gallery member Kate Trygstad. Waters Of Life explores this life-giving force through paintings, in scenes both personal and universal. Trygstad explained her theme: “Having always lived near water, I have long felt its call and recognized the power it holds for me. The wonderful lakes of Minnesota and the Mississippi River running through my home town of Minneapolis remain foundational to who I am. Other residences and many travels have found bodies of water featured as an important element. They touch me deeply. And physically, large bodies of water call to the water in our bodies, our largest component. Water is fundamental to life, we must consume it, and is essential to clean and healthful living. Water is a precious gift. How do we honor that gift? Water is water is water. I explore the impact of water in styles inspired by several subjects. My work is primarily impressionistic and expressionistic. The viewers, as second artists, are invited to bring their own experiences and responses to the work. What does water mean to you? To us?”

Additionally, our Main Gallery features new works by our gallery members, in media including oil, acrylic, pastel, watermedia, sculpture, glass, and ceramics.

Gallery Underground, the juried gallery of the Arlington Artists Alliance, has been named our region’s “Best Art Gallery” in Northern Virginia Magazine’s 2021 reader survey and has received a 2021 “Arlie” as one of Arlington’s “Best Shops” from the readers of ARLNow. Located in the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia, this visual arts venue showcases the work of established and emerging regional artists.

Each month the gallery changes its entire exhibit and presents a special solo, group or juried show in the Focus gallery and a new show from its talented members in the Main gallery, in many forms: mixed media, paintings, sculpture, glass, and ceramic art. Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground and on First Fridays (first Friday of every month) it hosts an opening reception free and open to all.

Spring Artful Weekend features artwork by 30+ talented Arlington Artists Alliance members and has been an annual show for the Arlington-based arts collective for over 20 years! With a large variety of art genres to choose from—paintings, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, glasswork, artist’s cards, and more—this show is perfect to kick-off Spring! This event is free and open to the public.

Arlington Artists Alliance is a 200+ member nonprofit organization that creates and promotes local art to enrich the Arlington community. Our artists exhibit year-round at a variety of Arlington community venues, including local government offices, community organizations, local businesses, restaurants and cafes.
