The Focus Gallery of Gallery Underground will present Beyond Boundaries, a group show from Studio 10 Artists. Beyond Boundaries showcases a collective of Arlington Artists: Elisabeth Hudgins, Kat Jamieson, Linda Maldonado, Elise Ritter, and Deborah Taylor. The Studio 10 Artists group presents a new show that explores what it means to move through and across many kinds of boundaries in a personal way. Creative travel beyond limitations proves to be exciting as well as freeing! Additionally, our Main Gallery features new works by our gallery members, in media including oil, acrylic, pastel, watermedia, sculpture, glass, and ceramics.

Gallery Underground, the juried gallery of the Arlington Artists Alliance, has been named our region’s “Best Art Gallery” in Northern Virginia Magazine’s 2021 reader survey and has received a 2021 “Arlie” as one of Arlington’s “Best Shops” from the readers of ARLNow. Located in the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia, this visual arts venue showcases the work of established and emerging regional artists.

Each month the gallery changes its entire exhibit and presents a special solo, group or juried show in the Focus gallery and a new show from its talented members in the Main gallery, in many forms: mixed media, paintings, sculpture, glass, and ceramic art. Gallery Underground anchors the visual arts component of Crystal City’s Art Underground and on First Fridays (first Friday of every month) it hosts an opening reception free and open to all.

The Focus Gallery of Gallery Underground will present In the Flow: A Celebration of Waterfalls, a solo show by Mark Coffey. Mark Coffey has been a long-time member of Arlington Artists Alliance and Gallery Underground, and will be moving out of Virginia at the end of the year. This exhibition not only captures the meditative awe of waterfalls, but also Coffey’s gratitude for his years spent with us at the Alliance and Gallery. Mark Coffey states, “The beauty and energy of flowing water invites us into a peaceful, meditative state of being. I love the experience of a walk in the woods where falling water is heard in the distance. Then as the trail approaches the source of this joyful noise, there is a break in the trees and the waterfall suddenly becomes visible. It’s like arriving at a dance performance. It strikes me that this waterfall dances and sings whether I’m there to see it or not- whether it’s surrounded by appreciative admirers or whether it’s alone in the middle of the night with only the moon and stars to see and hear.”

During the opening reception on December 2, 2022 we will be joined by the Arlington Chorale performing Christmas Carols.

Additionally, our Main Gallery features new works by our gallery members, in media including oil, acrylic, pastel, watermedia, sculpture, glass, and ceramics.

Arlington, Virginia – Gallery Underground’s Focus Gallery in October presents Gratitude, a solo show by Barry Barnett Keith. Keith’s solo exhibition, Gratitude, explores a myriad of subject matter from landscapes to superheroes in a color palette outside of Keith’s usual tone. Typically, Keith is a fast plein air painter, but the pieces in Gratitude are slowed down and detailed. His new paintings still carry over themes from his solo show last year at Gallery Underground, Water, but they also explore new themes for the artist.

Paintings such as “Brooklyn Stroll” and “Harper on the Rocks” are landscapes that delve into fantasy. “The Great Luzita” is a traditional portrait of a child’s intriguing face. “Windy Day” captures movement withing a landscape, while “Autumn” represents Keith’s favorite time of year. Gratitude represents Keith’s love of painting and love for all subject matter.

Additionally, our Main Gallery features new works by our gallery members, in media including oil, acrylic, pastel, watermedia, sculpture, glass, and ceramics.

Arlington, Virginia – Gallery Underground’s Focus Gallery in July presents Four Seasons, a solo show by Jane McElvany Coonce. When the pandemic started and we entered lock down, McElvany Coonce decided to make the best of it. She painted every day and began teaching her art classes over Zoom. This daily practice of painting and teaching from home turned a bad situation into a positive experience for McElvany Coonce. However, as the pandemic dragged on and galleries were closed McElvany Coonce had nowhere to display her work. This gave her the idea for a solo show, paintings of every season during the pandemic. McElvany Coonce says about her show “I know that the lockdown period was not easy for most people, but for me it was a growing period for me as an artist.” See her positive interpretation of the pandemic in Four Seasons at Gallery Underground.

***Gallery Underground’s Focus Gallery June show, Destruction, dives into the minds of high school students to understand what destruction means to them***

(Arlington, VA) Arlington Artists Alliance’s Gallery Underground will sponsor an exhibition from the Arlington Career Center students. Alliance members mentored students in all aspects of managing a professional gallery show.

“We partnered with Arlington Career Center to not only represent Arlington’s diverse community through art, but also to use our resources as an Alliance to teach students what it takes to be an artist in the real world,” says AAA Executive Director, Christina Papanicolaou. Arlington Career Center teacher Christina Ascani and AAA members are mentoring students in the myriad of behind the scene aspects of standing up a gallery show from framing, pricing art, to how to curate an exhibition. All proceeds from art commissions at the student show will be donated to the Career Center to purchase art supplies.

The students created the exhibition’s theme and title: Destruction. Together, they wrote about this concept:

“Every act of creation is first an act of destruction”- Pablo Picasso

Many of us are not yet eighteen but we’ve grown up in an age of destruction. In an era of a pandemic, global warming, war, and oppressive legislation, it often feels like there’s nothing left to destroy. Sometimes it’s easy to think, ‘What’s the point of fighting the inevitable?’ We sometimes are forced to wonder if this world is even worth saving…

Despite the path society is heading, we believe that there is something worth fighting for. We keep working for change and we believe that destruction has an opportunity for rebirth and renewal. Destruction can be beautiful, whether that be unkempt landscapes, broken glass, or shattered buildings. Beneath the shabby appearance of a derelict park or an abandoned building is the possibility of something new, the promise and act of creation.

This exhibition dives into the minds of high school students from the Arlington Career Center to understand what destruction means to us. This exhibit is a display of destruction through the mediums of photography, painting, and collage. We are turning art on its head by destroying the artwork of our classmates and using it to create new art. Our works push the definition of destruction itself to convey their creators unique thoughts and emotions about the world around them.

Opening Reception for Destruction is Friday, June 3, 2022 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The exhibition will run from May 31 through June 24, 2022. Gallery Underground is located at The Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia 22202. It is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
