🌟 Speech Topic : Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE) for Reduced Carbon Footprint and Embodied Energy

✨ Scott Whalen is a Chief Scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA. Dr. Whalen’s research team is developing Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE) to manufacture high-performance metals. His current research areas focus on technology maturation of the ShAPE extrusion process, conversion of aluminum scrap into automotive and construction components, low-carbon manufacturing, and fundamental science to improve performance in a variety of metals. Scott is the lead author on 11 peer reviewed journal articles and co-author on 30+ more. He is also an inventor on 7 granted and 12 pending US patents and received a 2020 R&D 100 Award as the primary innovator of ShAPE. 🍀 🍀

Prior to joining PNNL, Scott was a principal scientist in the Power Source Technologies Group at Sandia National Laboratories. Dr. Whalen holds a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho, MS degree in biomechanics from Texas A&M University, PhD in mechanical engineering from Washington State University, and completed a post-doctoral appointment in thermoelectric energy harvesting at Sandia National Laboratories. 🌱 🌱

👏 👏Raphael Thevenin from Constellium will attend the summit and bring a speech on the theme of “Path to decarbonize aluminium products”.

Raphael Thevenin has a long experience in the aluminum industry. Raphael earned a marketing and economics degree in France. He started his professional career in Australia, UK and Belgium in the automotive industry. In 2001, he joined Pechiney as marketing manager. Then he moved to Sales role in Alcan. Following the creation of Constellium, Raphael was given the responsibility for the cansheet sales team covering Europe and Middle East markets. In 2015, following the acquisition of Wise Alloys in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Raphael moved to Baltimore, to restructure the global cansheet sales organization. In summer 2022, he moved back to Europe as VP strategy and sustainability for the automotive and packaging business. He is based in Zurich, Switzerland. Raphael is married and has 3 children who are studying in France and Switzerland. He likes flying airplanes in his free time and is passionate for all water sports such as kitesurfing and sailing.🌱 🌱

Bjørn Kjetil is Head of Sustainability in Hydro. Prior to that, he was head of the Hydro’s Climate Office and Energy Strategy since 2011, and Head of Energy analysis from 2007 to 2011. Previously, he was Political Advisor to the Norwegian Minister of Oil and Energy. He is an economist by training.

The heavy industry sectors together emit more than 10 gigatonnes (Gt) of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, of which the aluminium industry generates around 1.1 billion tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) annually– around 2% of global anthropogenic emissions. It’s predicted to increase by 50% by 2050 under a business-as-usual scenario. Thus, reducing emissions throughout the whole life cycle of aluminium is a necessary and urgent issue.

European Green Aluminium Summit 2023 will take aluminium sustainable development as the theme, combined with the best practices of enterprises, hot topics about green aluminium trend, sustainable roadmap, carbon emissions reduction from upstream to downstream, renewable energy, inert anode, CCUS technology, closed-loop recycling, decarbon solutions, etc. will be discussed, aiming to provide new reference for aluminium related enterprises to Net Zero and develop sustainably.
